"My humble body is going to turn to dust one day, but the Republicwill eternally remain!" These celebrated words were propounced by MustafaKemal Atatürk; nevertheless, the memory of him and of his deedswill last forever. His name, as one of the greatest and wisest statesmen of the 20thcentury, echoes occasionally in the Yugoslav press even nowadays; thereforethe author of this text has recently published an appropriate article onthe anniversary of Kemal Atatürk's death; titled Ataya Saygı 2 , it appearedin the vveekly newspaper "TAN", which is issued in Turkish language inPristina. However, let's stick to the chronological order. In the beginning, aquestion appears whether it was a difficult assignment for Yugoslav ldngAlexander and mister Mustafa Kemal Atatürk to bring the two previouslyconfronted peoples together and make them truthful friends.Serbian literatüre and historiography from the beginning of the 20thcentury offer us several examples of sincere friendship betvveen individualrepresentatives of the Serbian and Turkish people. Such a friendshipwas a frequent topic in the short stories of the Serbian writer, GrigorijeBozovic, who wrote under the pseudonym Ömer Filipovic. Hovvever, ourattention will be paid to a Turkish-Serbian friendship from real life that, with brotherly devotion and mutual respect, tied Fethi Pasha, Turkishdeputy in Serbia of that time and Atanasije Popovic, professor and a journalistin the first decade of the 20th century. It was recorded that Fethi Pasha had once told mister Atanasije thefollowing words: "We, the Turks, know very well that we have takenyour lands from you by the sword; and that we shall have to bring themback to you by the sword again when the time comes for that for theyhave always belonged to you" 3 . It was but a few years later, during thefirst Balkan war, that the last remaining areas of land were freed from therule of the Turkish Empire. Fethi Pasha was killed in the war, as the Seventhcorps commander in chief, he met his death, fighting bravely, loyallyand persistently at the head of his army to the last moment. He died honourablyand was celebrated by his own kindred and respected by theSerbs. The Serbs had realized historic inevitability of being slaves to a greatempire; on the other hand, the Turks had acknowledged the inevitableend of their imperial power in due course.2.
