Nevertheless, the Tatars have not become just "Finns with Turknames". In my opinion, the term 'dual identity' suits their case vvell. Earlieron I mentioned their complete adaptation to the Finnish educationalsystem. At the same time their own religious, linguistic and cultural educationhas not lost its value. In Helsinki the curriculum of the Finnish-Turk Primary School includedinstruction in the Tatar language, the general history of the Turkpeoples, the religion of islam and the recitation of the Koran in Arabic. This, in the West, very exceptional school was established in 1948; in1969, hovvever, it unfortunately closed its doors. In Tampere there has been no Tatar school. Hovvever, an imam vvasinvited from the region of Kazan as early as in 1912. This Mr. Alautdin(Alaeddin, Alei Abbas) vvas follovved by several successors. Beside leadingthe prayers, one of their principal duties consisted in the instruction ofthe youth. In this respect Mr. Gibadulla (Gubaidulla) Murtazin (1895-1968) is remembered by the members of the congregation vvho studiedvvith him in the 1920s and '30s as "a complete, most modern teacher, notlike one of the old mullahs vvho themselves did not knovv much". On the one hand, the rebirth of Turkey under theleadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk offered an ideal for ali of the Turkpeoples-Turkey vvas the only independent Turk country. "It (i.e. Turkey)had been able to hold its ovvn and thus it vvas for us the only direction toturn in". In numerous Tatar homes a photo of Atatürk and the Turkishflag can be seen even today. The linguistic affinity has been vvell knovvn. On the other hand, hovvever, these connections gave rise to difficulties. The Tatar language isvvritten in the Arabic and Latin characters in Finland. In Tatar, hovvever,727
