lary. The contrast is striking. Equally striking is the parallel syntax of thetwo texts: the vocabulary change is achieved vvith minimal disruption ofsentence structure. The NUTUK, presented in two versions, is a vividdemonstration of the structural strength of Turkish, its ability to absorband utilize words from other languages, and its fecundity in generating effectivevocabulary to substitute for vvords of foreign origin. The radical reforms in the first decade of the Turkish Republic canbe matched by a similar series introduced in the decade of the FrenchRevolution, 1789-1799. The overthrovv of the monarchy, egalitarianism, calendar reform, changes in costume, the altering of the status of the religiousinstitution, standards for weights and measures can be matchedvvith vvhat took place during the French Revolution. What is peculiar tothe Turkish experience is the longevity of the reforms and the commonthread of continued change that engages the people in the process. Languageserves as conveyor and perpetuator of reform even as it itselfchanges. The language forged in the seventy-fıve years of the Republicnow has reached the point of taking stock of its gains. It needs to go intoan editing mode, where instead of vvorrying about vocabulary, it can surveyits practical and esthetic achievement. The keystone is in place, andin its maturity it can continue to maintain the edifıce of reforms createdby Atatürk.As the third generation of the Republic comes of age, Turkish hasthe opportunity to continue its communicative and esthetic mission in amultinational modern global setting. A snapshot of writing activity in theOttoman capital in the early tvventieth century reveals a mix of styles, invvhich the functional communication is just beginnnig to take root, vvhilethe hermetic language of the cultivated, the Servet-i Fünun and Fecr-i Atimovements represent the anachronistic, exhausted, Ottoman esthetics andliterary style. By the end of the tvventieth century, language reform, though subject to adjustments, is irreversible. It has created and continuesto create original literatüre that is being translated from Turkish into otherlanguages. The challenge the language faces novv is the impact of the nevvshared international vocabulary of technology ("technobabble") and correspondingchanges that modify nation and cultural identity. The debateöver the language issue in Turkey, vvhich peaked, one might say, in themiddle decades of the tvventieth century, novv presents a more relaxed attitude. The syntax continues to accommodate neologisms in transition toestablished usage; expressions and terms that persist as part of a pool ofalternative resource of signifıers; and the inevitable social and technicalvocabulary that seeps into the language through closer contact vvith contemporaryculture. Önce confident that plurality of choices does not meanbetrayal of language reform, but is a factor of enrichment of expressionand stylistic enhancement, it is hoped that a maturing taste for languagevvill seek clarity, accuracy, and esthetic structuring in the utilization ofTurkish. The efforts of nevv generations and the test of time vvill determinevvhat Turkish vvill be like in the next millenium.806
