He had one of the best jabs in the business, was very smooth in the ring, and
had great stamina and of course the ability to get up from a demolishing
knockdown(SHAVERS). I would place him right up there as one of the "GREATS",
even though CARL 'THE TRUTH' WILLIAMS came very close to de-throning him.|
rate Larry Holmes at a crystal clear top five all-time heavyweight, possibly top
three. On any given night, Holmes could win a decision against any heavyweight
in history. I agree that he's underrated. Part of the problem is that he
followed perhaps the best, most popular heavyweight champ, Ali. But in a weird
way, it was perfect---after Ali's brash/bold over the top personality, Holmes
provided a low-key, blue collar approach. Holmes quietly went about the
business of defending his title---over and over and over, for what, seven years?
He was a humble contrast to Ali, a lunch pail guy who stayed in Easton PA
instead of going Hollywood---or at least getting a Hollywood attitude. No,
Holmes didn't marry a sitcom actress, didn't go to jail, didn't TALK much about
what he would do in the ring and didn't bite ears---he just won. And won some
more. And won a few more after that. Hats off to Larry Holmes, who was clearly
the best heavyweight in the world for a long period of time.|
a good one. He was one of the greats for sure. The only thing that bothered me
about him was his remark concerning Rocky Marciano(after Holmes was defeated by
Spinks or Tyson???). Marciano was, in my opinion, an outstanding
heavyweight. His two greatest assets were his knockout power and his stamina.
There was no quit in this guy and I think that this was a key factor to his
success as he was able to hang in there, even when he was being soundly
beaten(Marciano/Charles2)to ultimately overpower his opponent. He was also smart
enough to retire undefeated and stay that way. |
comment made by Holmes after the M. Spinks fight, which doesn't need to repeated
here, was made in the heat of battle right after he lost a close fight he
thought he had won, A fight he likely still thinks he won but was robbed from
him by the officials. It isn't often mentioned that Holmes later
apologized to Marciano's family and fans for making the unfortunate
remark.Reporter sometimes ask dumb questions and Holmes' remark was a
response to one of them. But in defense of journalists, as I am a part
time boxing writer, you ever wonder why they do ask dumb questions?I
know in my case, I have been to press conferences or telephone tele conferenses
with a lot of reporters waiting to get a question in and I have written a few
questions down but by the time I get my chance, sometimes someone else has
already asked what I wanted to ask. I make up something off the top of my head
and it isn't always the best I could come up with.|
not be the right place to ask this but then again it might be the perfect. I am
doing some reserch on a boxer named Jimmy Heair. He fought mainly out of Los
Angeles in the 70's and was a top lightweight before stepping up to the
welterweight divison latter in his career. Any info would be greatly appreciated
thanks Hunter jfikes@watvc.com|
DC||funktron@yahoo.com||||10|Joey:Holmes' "jockstrap" comment was a mistake
and he knows it. To an extent, I blame Peter Marciano for the outburst. Holmes
was trying to tie the Rock's 49-0 record (and might have retired after winning
one more to go 50-0). Rock's brother Peter was at the post-fight press
conference, apparently quite satisfied with Spinks' controversial win (I say
controversial because he certainly didn't take the fight to Holmes---and most
champions would have never lost their belt based on this challenger's
performance) but be that as it may---Holmes had a shot at making history, and
suddenly realized that in the room was someone who had been cheering against him
