Tyson was fighting world class fighters at a very young age but he was the
exception, not the rule and his situation was different in that he didn't have
as many tough fights early as Jerry did.James "Quick" Tillis was about
the only one before he won the title but even so Tyson developed much earlier
than most heavyweights and probably Tony Tucker was the only other tough fight
after he was a champion until the loss to Buster Douglas.|
do you remember about Bernardo Mercado? I remember that for a time, he was
undefeated and promising. He suffered a few losses but I was surprised that he
KOed Shavers later in their careers. Did you ever see that fight? I'm
wondering how it played out. I have a Shavers video that shows him nailing
Mercado, but it doesn't show how the fight turned against Shavers. |
remember Mercado as being a big puncher who couldn't take a punch well
himself. The Shavers fight, as I remember it, was like Shavers' loss to
Tex Cobb. Mercado survived the early onslaught by Shavers, amazing in that the
one time when Mercado's chin didn't let him down was against one of the biggest
punchers of all time.Shavers fell from fatigue, like in the Cobb fight
verses Mercado.Leon Spinks' biggest win besides Ali, was against Mercado
and it earned Leon a shot at Larry Holmes for the title.Leon charged
hard at Holmes and he tagged Holmes a few times hard in his title shot but
Holmes caught Spinks' coming in the third round and he knocked Leon
out.Back to Mercado, I think at least some of the contenders in the late
70s and early 80s avoided Mercado as the man could really punch.|
Kilitscko has been forced to retire. Firstly as he is probably the most talented
boxer in the heavyweight division and secondly because his promise is utterly
unfulfilled. He lost to the best two boxers of the millenium in Lewis and Byrd,
and who has he got on his success list? Sanders, brave but limited, a past prime
Larry Donald, Danny Williams, Herbie Hide? Please. Tua, Rahman and even Ruiz
have better wins. Wladimir, Tua, Rahman, Ruiz, Byrd, Toney, Brewster and Peter
to make an eight man tournament with winner takes all.|
all."Not much to choose from MARK, but I'd pick BYRD, one of the
smallest but most talented where boxing skills are concerned. |
|11/9/05 08:56:44 AM|Angelo|Washington, DC||funktron@yahoo.com||||10|Guys, see
below. I saw this quote on the "The Sweet Science" site (nice boxing website,
www.thesweetscience.com). Anyway, I know that there are some Klitscho fans on
our own Jerry Quarry page, but I find it very hard to disagree with Ruiz's
comments. I'm wondering what all of you think. I for one am as fed up as Ruiz
is. All I've heard for the past few years is Klitscho this and Klitscho that,
they're as good as Tyson, they'd beat Quarry, blah, blah, blah. Where's the
beef? I don't want to hear about potential anymore. I agree with Ruiz.
Comments?By way of a press release, John Ruiz (or whoever wrote this for
him) piled on Vitali Klitschko, who pulled out of his WBC heavyweight title
fight with Hasim Rahman with a knee injury. “I’m not surprised and I
don’t think too many people in boxing are really surprised. First it was his
hamstring injury from jogging, then it spread to his back, and now it’s his
knee. It’s always something with this guy. They should really check his heart.
HBO, Ring and anybody else that supports this guy as the so-called real
heavyweight champion of the world should be ashamed of themselves. They have
their own agendas. Klitschko doesn’t want to fight anybody he can’t handpick.
