Holmes won the decision in the first fight, and matched Marciano at 49-0, and
then in the next defense, against whoever challenged, won and broke Marciano's
heavyweight who can punch and also can get out of the way of punches and counter
punch with power then you have a guy who is always in fight and dangerous for
any opponent. That is why Jerry Quarry was such an exciting fighter and why he
beat the very best. Some of these guys like Ernie hate admitting it. But he was
that close and that good. He was better than Norton evrybody knows that. The 2
fights with Ali were heartbreakers and if you followed it at the time you'd
remember he was cut in what would be a no -decision now a days. Frazier is
another story. So Ernie quit acting like you are a Quarry fan. |
cutting an opponent is a goal, something a fighter tries to do, especially Ali
with his twisting impact blows. Jerry did not beat the very best. He lost to the
very best. He was not close to beating Ali, Frazier or the very best. Your
argument is the type that plagues this site, Fran. You're not talking about the
Jerry of reality, but the better Jerry of your imagination, someone who in some
magical way reigned as heavyweight champion. He did not. Jimmy Ellis did, for
one version of the crown. That doesn't mean Jerry did, too. Don't rewrite
history to fit your own hopes and wishes. We already said time and again that
Jerry was a great fighter, an uncommonly superb heavyweight. But he was not
better than Ali and Frazier and did not beat them. I think Jerry would be
embarrassed if he heard you arguing that he was the best, that he beat all these
people he didn't, that he was cheated and so forth. It embarrasses me. |
|8/13/04 01:53:41 PM|Angelo|Washington, DC||funktron@yahoo.com||||10|Fran: I'll
add that boxing insiders (including the guy people love to hate, Cosell) said
that Quarry was among the best counter-punchers ever seen in the heavyweight
division. That, coupled with JQ's legendary ability to take a punch and not go
down or out, and his intelligence in approaching larger, stronger guys made him
a great heavyweight---and I'll agree with Foreman, maybe the best heavyweight
never to win the title. To me, when Quarry was well conditioned and motivated,
only two things could stop him from beating most opponents: Slightly smaller
than average size for a heavy, and he cut too easily. Those were his
weaknesses, especially the cutting. Also, there's nothing wrong with the
speculation of "ifs and buts". I don't think anyone here has said that Quarry
