Ali was given credit for a great uppercut (which Futch said he didn't have), but
didn't use it that much against JF. This would have been effective. Had MA spent
time practicing the timing of uppercuts with Frazier's bobs, rather than
clowning around, and playing rope-a-dope in the gym, he might have had another
weapon. Frazier was practicing the bobs and weaves, in synchrony with attack,
thousands of times, literally. That bobbing and weaving constanty is hard to do,
particularly with a constant potential for, and execution to offense. |
managers are more of a controlling influence in young contenders, but in Joe
Frazier's case he was a hardened professional and I do not think that anyone
would have told him who to fight and who not to fight. The final decision was
his responsibility. I also don't think that likely gate takings were a factor in
who Frazier fought after Ali. I believe that fights against Norton (especially),
Lyle, Shavers, and Young, had more money potential than 'repeats' against Jerry
Q (who he beat in 1969) and Jimmy Ellis (thoroughly beaten by him in 1970). So I
think that there must be a reason other than managers and finances. In the year
after Frazier beat Ali in March 1971, Frazier didn't fight again until January
1972 and then again in May 1972. He was out of the ring for nearly a year and he
then only fought Terry Daniels and Ron Stander (heard of them ?). Ali on the
other hand was back in the ring only four months after that first fight with
Frazier and had two more fights that same year. In fact, after that first Ali
fight, Frazier only fought another 10 times and got beaten in four of them. Yet
after that first fight with Frazier, Ali fought 29 more times winning 25 fights.
I have too much respect for Frazier's ability to say that he was 'ducking'
anyone, but I think that the evidence shows that the first fight with Ali had
more of a detrimental affect on his psych and body than it did on Ali. P.S.
Massimo's sense of humour is not readily understood and I am sure he meant no
offense. |
different from the standard English they taught me at school ! I realize that
sometimes I joke too much, it's my nature. I'm an Italian Ralph Malph
enjoyed your last posting even though it is distracting me from watching the
World Cup Rugby Union. While I am trying to concentrate on the Australia v
Argentina game, I am instead visualising what a Mrs Koo Koo would look like.
Your sense of humour is as kooky as Massimo's and that is good. I often wonder
where Toby from the old Frazier web site went. I miss his sense of humour.
Australia 11, Argentina 3.|
