might have been, if..." I don't buy that, either you have the results or you
don't. Darryl Strawberry might have been another Ted Williams but he chose
drugs and alcohol. Are we say that if we discount the years Strawberry did
drugs and alcohol, he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Maybe we should
create a Hall of Fame for all those who threw away careers for whatever reason.
We can call it the "Hall of Fame of Excuse's," or the "Hall of Fame of What
Might Have Been." Personally, I still would not include Cooney even in this
Hall of Fame. He had a glass jaw, no stamina, and most importantly of all NO
would like to make a statement retraction on the little that i wrote about
Cooney. I in know way wanted to take away from the victories that Spinks and
Foreman had over Cooney, wrong choice of words when i said you should not count
those. The point I was trying to make was when you look at a fighter and you
rate and compare you should look at them at there best, and for Cooney his best
was a loss. I was in know way trying to make him out to be something he is not.
guys think about our olympian from ark. jermaine taylor?|
|8/11/03 08:43:24 PM|Kent|La Habra, Ca||oriononside@aol.com||||10|Yes Forest, my
mistake, I misread your post and you didn't say it is being illogical to say
Cooney gave Holmes a tough fight. You do however don't think it was one of
Holmes tougher defenses. I do because Holmes did lose a lot of rounds in the
fight but I don't agree with the judges that Cooney, without the point
deductions for low blows, was leading the fight after twelve rounds. But I also
don't think Holmes had a walkover like he did with Scott Frank. Yes Holmes put
down Cooney in the second round but he wasn't able to finish him until the
thirteenth round because Cooney was throwing a lot of punches and Holmes had to
fight a smart fight and wait for the right moment as Cooney was still very
dangerous. One of the reasons I think the Cooney fight was one of Holmes'
tougher defenses during his peak era was because although Holmes verses Snipes
and Shavers was in real danger of losing due to suffering knockdowns in both of
these fights, Cooney won more rounds than either Snipes or Shavers. It has been
a while since I have seen either of these fights but I remember Holmes
controlling most of the action except for the times of danger agaisnt both of
these opponents. Mike Weaver and Tim Witherspoon were probably Holmes' toughest
defenses during his peak (which I thin can be extended to 1983 as he was still
dominate then). Still the Cooney fight does rank up there as one of his
toughest defenses. You are right, Foreman's and Spinks' wins over
Cooney should not be dicounted just because Cooney showed up unprepared, for
whatever reason. If he wasn't ready to fight, then he should not have been in
the ring. I tend to think he was more ill-prepared for the Spinks fight and it
was more of a case of his chin failing him agaisnt Foreman. Bottome line,
Cooney's chin could not hold up to George's power and the same result would have
likely happened at any point that they fought. |
|8/12/03 01:31:16 PM|John Gerard|NYC||rock289z@yahoo.com||||10|Didn't Holmes
score a knockdown against Cooney in an early round?|
|8/12/03 04:13:37 PM|Kent|La Habra, Ca||oriononiside@aol.com||||10|Yes, Holmes
knocked Cooney down in the second round. He also had him hurt and almost
knocked down in the sixth. The reason why I say it was still a very
tough fight for Holmes in spite of the knockdown, the near knockdown, and the
eventual knockout was because it was very competitive the rest of the time and I
gave Cooney at least five of the twelve rounds before the knockout, maybe even
six rounds, which without the points deducted for his low blows, would have had
it a draw on my card going into the ending round of the fight. Cooney rallied
back from near defeat at those times to make a good showing for himself. At
least in this fight, Cooney had a lot of heart. When I saw the fight as
