thanks for the kind comments.Jerry was many things, including exciting.
When he came to fight, you knew he'd give it his all. That's missing in many
of today's "contenders."Jerry Quarry fought in the era of the greatest
heavyweights ever. He probably was one of the best ever who never won a World
Title. |
with a short sharp punch.|
think the knockdown of Liston in the second Ali fight was real but Liston could
have beat the count.Referee Jersey Joe Walcott didn't control Ali and
send him to a neutral corner, which he should have done before taking up the
count.Liston may have thought Ali would hit him while he was down. If
you remember, Walcott had walked away from the fighters and they started
fighting again while Walcott was talking to someone about where the count was.
Walcott was totally confused. It was when Walcott returned to the
fighters that he signaled the fight was over. |
one of the biggest Ali fans out there---but I look at that fight and at that
punch, and something doesn't seem legitimate to me. Sonny Liston was one of the
biggest and baddest ever. I know Ali's short, quick punch might have landed
flush, but it just didn't seem to carry enough steam to knockdown someone like
Liston, especially in the first round, before any other damage was done. Was
there any other history of Liston going down like this early in a fight? |
tough, but like frazier he could be hurt, remeber that leotis martin knocked
liston out, i believe w/ one punch, so it can happen to the best of them,
frazier was shook against Ron, Stander, Ali, (the second fight)a guy by the name
of Manual Ramos, Oscar Bonavena (1st fight) and of course George Foreman. so
after pondering this fight fight for many years i believe it was real.|
|5/9/06 11:21:49 AM|Massimo|Roma||4||||10|I agree with Angelo that something was
not legitimate in the second Ali'-Liston fight. Sonny Liston could certainly
take a punch. He took Cleveland Williams' best shots and was knocked down I
think only 3 times in 54 fights (second fight with Marty Marshall,Ali', Leotis
Martin). Probably Sonny was beaten in his mind before the fight started. We'll
never know the truth, it's like Andre's height.|
|5/9/06 03:54:35 PM|Angelo|Washington, DC||funktron||||10|Massimo: A punch like
that might get Liston fired up and mad---not knock him down. That's what is
weird about seeing him on his back and counted out. Like I said, the punch
might have landed and might have stung, but it didn't look bad enough to KO
Liston. |
LOOK, the punch did not look like it would knock him out, the punch that knocked
out Zora Foley looked about the same, a right hand over the top, liston was
caught cold, simple as that, the theories of liston taking a dive will continue
forever, people love a good story|
|5/11/06 01:42:59 AM|Noam|same||same||||10|While in my opinion it was a
legitimate knockdown, I think that Liston could have got up had he wanted. But
he was beaten psychologically and decided to stay down rather than suffer a
worse beating than the first fight. For that reason I don't think the
fight was fixed; I just think that Liston had had enough. This is what
Angelo Dundee said about that second fight in his book:"Some people, who
obviously never saw the fight, or if they did were not paying enough attention,
said that Liston went down without being hit. They said he had not been counted
out and that the fight had been fixed. Horsefeathers!"Dundee is wrong
about Angelo and Massimo. They have seen the fight and did pay attention. He
