1970s would have never let Stewart back into the fight. He would have destroyed
Stewart early without a second thought. |
remember it was Morrison who had Mercer covering up, until Mercer came off the
ropes and turned the tables on him. He caught Morrison coming in and hit him
about twenty times before Morrison fell, I don't think it was one punch. Both
Mercer and Morrison were underrated, in my opinion. Ellis-Bonavena in the 1967
tourney went a similar way. How about Marciano - Walcott,Foreman-Norton or
Tyson-Berbick? Thanks Kent and Angelo, for bringing it back to boxing.|
1 point ahead at the end of the fight. The two knockdowns were in the second
round. Foreman had a great 8 round in which he hit Alessandro with two
devastating uppercuts in a row. Giorgio won the second round by 3 points, the
eighth and probably even the first, the third and the seventh round. But it's
true that Foreman looked in worse shape than Alessandro at the end of the fight,
all swollen up and bleeding from the nose. The fact that Alessandro fought so
well against Giorgio, while fought like a bum against Michele Geraldo in 1990,
is a good example of the importance of intimidation in boxing.|
have never seen the Foreman verses Stewart fight since it happened. So you
would know more of the details of the fight. It sure seemed to me that Stewart
was hitting Foreman with a lot of punches in the whole fight and Stewart hit
very hard himself. Stewart reminds me of Mac Foster in that he had almost all
of his wins by knockout and some good boxing skills but was an otherwise limited
fighter, just below the best of the division. The Stewart fight was the
one fight where I thought Foreman's comeback should end at that point as I never
saw George look so beat up before. George was scary to look at. He looked
like a bruised up balloon head.|
Roman Emperor, Maximinus Thrax, who was, by all accounts, over 8 feet wilt. A
couple of Roman historians talk about his incredible wiltness. He would have
made Wilt look andre'.This about 2000 years before Wilton Norman came to
light|
Morrison both fighters were undefeated. Both were upcoming promising fighters
and nobody knew that Mercers jaw was iron and that Tommy had some stamina and
chin problems.I remember Morrison opened up big time against Mercer and
looked like he was going to knock him out. Mercer weathered the storm and a
round or 2 later hurt Morrison and Tommy took quite a few real hard punches when
he was already ko'ed on the ropes. Tommy was out for a long time and everybody
held there breath that he was ok. Ray really lived up to his name of "Merciless
Ray Mercer" ( not that Tommy wouldn't have done same thing to him though, it's
boxing). The fight really pointed out the dangers of boxing in that Tommy got
hit many times after he was already ko'ed but referee wasn't in positon to stop
fight quickly enough. I read that Tommy never really recovered from that knock
out either.|
really recovered from that knock-out ? I have read Tommy had AIDS problems, but
I have never read he had mental problems from punches.|
