saying that a google check on 'niggling tactics' shows that it has specific
meaning to world sports like rugby, football, etc, in the same context I used it
to Cry Baby Pete.Build a bridge, Pete, and get over your problem, pal,
because you're boring everyone. And pull your head in because we're looking for
wood. :)|
the word niggling much. As far as being insular, I would have to agree that is
true. Although thankfully for you Brits we came out of our borders during
WWII.|
not use the word "niggling" in referring to anyone of any race as it is not a
word I have ever used.As fan pointed out, it is a word that is not in
common use in America.Maybe you are not aware but I am not a white man
either, at least not completely.I am of mixed race, white European, and
Native American. In fact I am a member of a prominent California Indian
tribe. As a child some of my so called friends in my mostly white
neighborhood would sometimes tell me that I wasn't completely white, that I was
part beaner (a racial slur for Mexican) and the more I would tell them that I am
not Mexican, that I am Indian, they would call me Beaner or Beaner
lover. I do understand how you could misinterpret an uncommon word as
being racist and I do understand racism towards me, if not as much as you but at
least to a certain extent, about how you feel about it.I also understand
how Noam and Howard are insulted by being called racist.BUT LIKE I SAID,
I AM NOT TAKING SIDES IN THIS FEUD. I SEE POINTS ON BOTH SIDES BUT IT IS MORE
IMPORTANT THAT WE VALUE THIS SITE AND WE ALL WOULD LIKE IT TO CONTINUE. SO
PLEASE SOMEONE TAKE THE FIRST STEP AND MAKE PEACE SO BRANDI DOESN'T SHUT IT
DOWN.YOU KNOW, I HAVEN'T EVEN VISITED THIS SITE SINCE MY LAST POST. IT
JUST ISN'T FUN WHEN THE FIGHTING IS GOING ON. I AM NOT LEAVING BUT I DID TAKE
ANOTHER SHORT BREAK HOPING THE FIGHTING HAD STOPPED. HOPE IT DOES SOON.|
Young, Jerry Quarry had wins over former champion Floyd Patterson and contenders
such as, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers, Buster Mathis, Mac Foster, and Thad
Spencer.Jerry was ranked in the top ten for almost ten years and George
Foreman called him the best heavyweight who didn't win the title. In fact
Foreman said he avoided fighting Jerry when he was in his first stint as
champion.|
|10/30/05 02:28:38 PM|Noam|same||same||||10|Kent, you might not use the word but
the rest of the world does and they do it in the same context I used it when
talking about Pete (asking him to stop the relentless niggling). It's a
dictionary word with no racial inference and a google search proves what I'm
saying. Because Pete doesn't recognize a word or know it's universal meaning
doesn't give him the right to falsely call anyone a racist. He obviously knows
by now that he got it wrong and his failure to apologize gives an insight to his
character or lack of. No one here apart from Pete has attached a racial
slur to the term, even though most Americans apparently don't recognize the
word, despite it being in your dictionaries. Seems that American vocabulary is
shrinking because of political correctness gone crazy. Any word that can be
twisted and mangled out of intended context and dictionary use becomes defunct
in America to avoid giving some whacko the opportunity to base a false
allegation. So perfectly normal words with non-racial meanings like niggardly or
niggling can't be used because of similarity in spelling and sound to nigger.
Speaking American must be like walking on egg shells with guys like Pete ready
to pounce, scream foul, and cry crodadile tears. |
|10/30/05 02:35:01 PM|Noam|same||same||||10|Fan from Fandom - I'm not critizing
Americans saying they are insular and I hope you haven't interpreted it that
way. I'm just stating what appears logical about your failure to know the word
'niggling' when it has widespread currency elsewhere in the English speaking
