gives them an edge. How else do we explain how a blown up middleweight, James
Toney, can be a leading heavyweight contender now.|
President-Yeah, Jumpity Bruce would make all the all time greats look
silly by jumping and hitting, hitting and jumping. He would invent a new way to
box: HIT and JUMP. Jumpity Bruce would shock the wordl. He is the greatest. |
to have skill added to it to make a heavyweight good and skill has to be
developed over time."This is very true KENT. When I think of fighters
like MARCIANO, LISTON, CHUVALO, QUARRY just to name a few, I wouldn't consider
them to be athletically gifted, yet each went on to make his mark in the
heavyweight division by developing his skills and using other inate
qualities(strength, heart, determination etc.)to make it to the top.A few
fighters that always struck me as being athletically gifted would be of course
ALI, HOLMES, SUGAR RAY ROBINSON, LEONARD,HEARNS, ROY JONES...these fighters
probably would have done well at track&field, basketball, baseball, so they
would have a natural advantage going into boxing; but it is quite true that
boxing skills have to be developed over a period of time in order to be
successful.|
the neighborhood, lived a couple of blocks off Colden Park). I agree with
you 100% with your appreciation of Monzon, the guy was the simply the best at
160, had it all: moves, chin, speed, stamina, punch, you name it!As regards
a Quarry v. Cooney bout in my mind I can almost see it happening: Jerry
would have gotten inside Gerry before six rounds, delivering really punishing
body shots before finishing him off with a letal double left hook to the
head...|
record/career?The guy fought like the great middleweights from the 40's and
50's.Most of all he retired a winner !|
|12/31/05 06:23:34 PM|Kent |Murrieta, Ca||kentallenent@aol.com||||10|I would
have to go with Sugar Ray Robinson as the greatest middleweight. Of course I
have only seen him on tape but he showed the skills that would make him hard to
beat by anyone in any era at middleweight.Monzon is close as is Marvin
Haglar.Haglar always felt he was robbed in his fight with Leonard but I
felt the fight was very close with Haglar coming on strong and looking better in
the later rounds but the decision was not unfair as Haglar didn't do enough in
the early rounds so he left some doubt if he won or not.It reminds of
the first Hopkins verses Taylor fight. Hopkins also gave away too many early
rounds by not throwing enough punches.I thought Hopkins was a narrow
winner in their second fight but it was close enough again that the decision in
Taylor's favor was not unfair.|
and Happy New Year to the Jerry Quarry Foundation site.Despite the way I was
treated here, I'm glad to see the site for my favorite fighter and his family is
still here.Quarry fans are encouraged to visit my site, irishjerryq@
yahoo.groups.com, which is basically a fan site I started for the Quarrys last
year. While it is not even close to as good as this site, it does give
members a chance to contribute to the building of a site which remembers not
just the Quarrys, but also the great match opponents they had and the great
boxing era they were a part of. Pleae consider it as a second Quarry site to
visit after this one. Thanks and Best Wishes. |
about the top 10 heavyweight champs and one of the guests, Bert Sugar, gave an
interesting triva tidbit about Rocky Marciano. He said the main reason
