a close decision. Which is the better plan? Fight the other guy's fight and
lose, even if it was a close fight or fight in your style and win easily? No
contest, the second plan is the better one.I don't agree Duran was
fighting out of his weight class as even though his best years were at
lightweight, he had outgrown the division. Also, not only did he win a
decision over Leonard in their first fight, Duran had beaten a very good former
welterweight champion in Carlos Palimino to get a shot at Leonard's
title. In addtion to his success at welterweight, Duran did come close to
beating a great middleweight champion in Marvin Haglar and he also would go on
to win titles in the junior middleweight and middleweight
divisions.Still, quitting in the ring tarnishes his status as an all
time great somewhat. A warrior doesn't quit.|
cited and read it. I'll quote, "The Ring Magazine's ANNUAL ratings." Perhaps it
should more accurately read 'December ratings'. If I am wrong, it isn't the
first time, as you pointed out. At least I'm not childish and boring. :)|
explanation for what he did, and was not endorsing it. Duran says he stopped
fighting as a protest against Leonard. I agree that this was not
legitimate. But remember that Duran wasn't hurt or fatigued. He just
threw his arms in the air and walked. It was a spur of the moment thing.
How many times did Tyson quit ? Foreman ? I think he wasn't hurt against
Ali and he quit because he was dispirited and fatigued. Did Duran take steroids
? No. Unlike Toney. I agree that Duran's act was unacceptable, but does
it warrant the righteous indignation ? Despite this one blemish over a very long
career, Duran was still a great of any division. It can't be argued that he
continually fought the best fighters in the world and ducked no one. Hell, he
even jumped divisions to fight other great fighters. Some fighters wouldn't even
fight all the viable contenders in their OWN division, let alone hunting
elsewhere as Duran did.Duran never knocked back any fights. He didn't
avoid fights with ranked contenders to fight unranked ones. He didn't quibble
over money to make excuses for not fighting someone.Personally, in my
opinion, not ducking ANYONE, and fighting the BEST, more than makes up for the
single blemish on Duran's resume. Duran never had to make excuses for not
fighting a viable contender. No quack in Roberto.|
Wladimir Klitschko won enough rounds to win a unanimous decision over Samuel
Peter but Peter knocked him down three times in the fight.Klitschko
showed he has heart to get hurt and fight back despite the fact he doesn't take
a big punch well.Peter would have likely knocked out Klitschko if he had
just thrown more punches. He just gave too many rounds away following Klitskcho
around and looking for the big punch for the knockout. But when he did
combinations, he hurt Klitschko but he just didn't let his hands go
enough.Peter is twenty five years old so there is still a lot of time to
work on the boxing skills he needs to go to the top|
