Greg, Jerry Quarry advanced to the number one contender spot three times in his
career, getting two title shots. After making it to the finals in the WBA
tournament to name a new champion after Muhammed Ali was forced to retire due to
his legal difficulties at the time, Jerry lost a fifteen round split decision to
Jimmy Ellis. Jerry also lost on cuts in seven rounds to Joe Frazier for the
title in a brutal fight in which both fighters went toe to toe in a real war.
The first round of that fight was called one of the twelve best rounds in boxing
history by The Ring Magazine. Oh by the way, Jerry got the better of Joe in
that great round.Jerry's biggest wins were over Floyd Patterson, Ron
Lyle, Earnie Shavers, and Buster Mathis. Jerry also defeated rising young
contenders such as Mac Foster and Thad Spencer. Foster going into his fight
with Quarry, had a record of 24-0, 24 by Knockout, while Spencer had just upset
the WBA number one contender Ernie Terrell. In additon to these fighters, Jerry
had wins over contenders such as Jack Bodell, Larry Middleton, Lorenzo Zanon,
Brian London, among others.Jerry Quarry was called the best heavyweight
to never win a title by former champion George Foreman.Mike Quarry was a
fine light heavyweight who got one title shot against legendary champion Bob
Foster but he lost by a fourth round knockout. In a shameless plug, go
to www.eastsideboxing.com and click on a link called "The Time Tunnel" for an
article I wrote about Mike and his career entitled. "Mike Quarry, A Warrior in
his Own Right." On the list of articles in the "Time Tunnel" section there is
also an article I wrote about Jerry's fight with Ron Lyle and another about
Jerry's career from another writer. I hope you check it out.Newcomers,
feel free to vote on our hypothetical heavyweight tournment featuring 64 of the
best heavyweights since Rocky Marciano was champion (the 1950's). All you have
to do is vote for who you think would win a particular bout.|
Lorenzo Zanon,by far. Nobody in the boxing wordl would rememberJerry
Quarry without that win.|
|7/4/04 12:07:38 PM|angelo|dc||funktron@yahoo.com||||10|massimo: Hey, the Zanon
fight WAS memorable! It was on the undercard to the Jimmy Young-Ken Norton
"title" bout. Norton ended up as the Champion by getting the squeeker decision
against Young, but then lost to Larry Holmes. Meanwhile, Zanon, who had fought
nicely against Norton a few months earlier (before crumbling in round 5 after
Norton got untracked) boxed brilliantly against Quarry for most of the fight,
peppering Jerry with jabs and frustrating him with good defense and movement.
Finally, the well out of his prime Quarry caught up to Zanon and dropped him.
Had Zanon had a better chin, he could have been a real mennace to the 70's/80's
heavyweights. |
that we Italians can't play soccer and in basketball we have never had a
championof Wilt's level. But, indeed, we are the best in boxing: Spalla,
Carnera, Damiani, Zanon, Francesco De Piccoli, Giulio Rinaldi, Nino Benvenuti,
Duilio Loi... These guys are legends and no other country in the wordl can
mention anything better. Who was De Piccoli ? Do you remember when a young
bragging guy with a big mouth won the gold medal in the LIGHT heavyweight
division in Rome ? His name was Cassius Marcellus Clay, he had a good career
afterwards. Well, De Piccoli won the gold medal in the HEAVYWEIGHT division.
This means that he would have whipped Cassius's ass in 1960. Andre' ? I
guess they got confused... Not 7'5", but 5'7"....In Italy nobody ( but me)
remembers LorenzoZanon. This is very sad.|
fight and an exciting one with Oliver taking some serious blows but hanging on
to drop a decision - 9 rounds to 3. His face busted. Lyle vs Valdes is a really
tough match to call - I would take Lyle to win by knockout. |
? You are talking ( or speaking) of him with great respect, you think he would
