I am still hoping to find the articles that stated Joe and Ali had made
up but I just have time to pop in during the next couple of days. |
short,special series of shows on greatest fights.I think it was called 'When
Kings where Kings'.One of these was on the Ali, Frazier trilogy.Bert Sugar
was the backround commentater.Now, I actually heard Frazier apoligise to the Ali
familly for any hurtfull remarks he made regarding Ali's present condition ,and
any other mean and spitefull remarks he may have made over the years.He said ,
and these are his words,"To bury the hatchet".I'm sitting here telling you I
heard Joe Frazier say this on tv.I'ts easy enough to check.Call HBO!If this
doesen't let Joe Frazier off the hook for his anger,Then maybe you guys should
find another reason to hate him.I can't but find a sad irony in Joe's apology,I
wonder if Ali feels the same way,after all the destruction they wreaked on each
other? ''|
comments regarding the feud between them---and I admit that the comments I've
heard from him are less of an apology to Frazier and more a rationalization that
he was just hyping the fights and Frazier should have understood that. It's
Ali's way of coming clean on what happened all those years ago. And if Steve's
account of the HBO show is accurate, and Frazier apologized, that's as much as
we should expect. The hurt was deep I guess---within the black community, at
the time, Ali was playing on Frazier's "dark" skin and also the fact that he was
a favorite of white fans. As an Ali fan, I admit that painting Frazier as an
"Uncle Tom" to sell tickets was way over the line. But calling him a gorilla
(and hitting a hand-held rubber gorilla in the head over and over) was Ali
playing around and having fun, like when he called Shavers and acorn and rubbed
Shaver's head for luck as the referee was giving instructions. It was vintage
Ali promoting the fight and getting attention, and Frazier should chill out
about that stuff. I've got to say, just thinking about those fights, and
recalling Foreman-Lyle, Young-Foreman, Holmes-Norton---it makes me sad thinking
that not only is the heavyweight division lacking in talent now, but also in
charisma and drama. Love him or hate him, Ali gave us the greatest show on
Earth for a few years. Holmes did an admirable job of filling Ali's big shoes,
and stabilizing the title picture for 6-7 years (We knew he was the real
champion.). Now, it's more alphabet soup than ever before, not so much quality
and not nearly enough rivalry and conflict in the heavyweight division. |
build this Ali vs Frazier hatred subject,{and,my compliments,you've certainly
gotten alot of attention}into a statement of reality.I've been tracking Fran and
Forrest on this site for a long time.Oh, by the way ,their both ex-fighters,did
you know that? Both Fran And I come from the Philly area.I've met Joe Frazier
at his gym.I'm sure Fran has too. He was allways fun loving and generous.and
could work harder than any man alive at that time. |
|8/23/04 09:14:47 PM|steve |NJ||drmsrm@comcast.net||||10|Angelo,I really resent
that comment. I'VE NEVER had to lie or distort what I've on heard on tv to
placate anyone.I thought we were mostly all gentleman on this site.Make no
mistake about it,if I make a statement on this site,I'ts true to the best of my
knowledge and sources.Why else would I post?I'm not koko bird,here,you
know.Show a little courtesy and flexability!I'm not evan trying to change your
allready well known opinions on Ali.|
|8/23/04 09:32:01 PM|steve |N.J.||dmmsrm@comcast.net||||10|Angello,the post
about building a hate relationship between Ali and Frazier and enmeshing Fran
AND Forrest was not directed at you.It was directed at Samansa.|
|8/23/04 09:37:51 PM|Steve|N.J.||dmmsrm@comcast.net||||10|I apologise again.I
meant to say Timana,from Auckland.Whew, it's late, and I'm going to bed.|
|8/23/04 11:53:27 PM|Gerry|Cleveland||same||||10|Wow. The Ali-Frazier thing
remains an intense subject for some. It is remarkable to say the least that what
