een fought under today's rules, than most of the knockdowns would not have
happened because today, the referees check the fighters to see if they are
alright before they let the fight continue. When Baer and Carnera fought, Baer
would come back in the moment the referee finished counting and he would start
hitting Carnera again, knocking him down again. Also, in the rounds that
Carnera was not knocked down, at least four of them, Carnera landed more
punches, jabs and follow up right hands and uppercuts than Baer landed, winning
the rounds by my scoring. It is quite possible that without the multiple
knockdowns, that if Carnera had been knocked down three times in the entire
fight by todays rules instead of eleven times, he might have even had a chance
of winning the fight. I always knew that Da Preem had a lot of courage
for getting up so many times but he acutally fought much better against Bear
than he has ever been given credit for.|
East.com||||10|Kent-Carnera himself said that he injured his ankle
between the first and the second round by getting up from the stool. The
knockdowns in the eleventh round were not caused by punches ( Baer's punches
probably didn't even land) but by the injury. Most people thinks (or think) that
Baer was better than Carnera stilistically while Primo punched harder. I think
the contrary is true. Max Baer couldn't fight, did not have a jab, did not move
the head correctly, was ackward and easy to hit, Joe Louis couldn't miss him
with his jab. The only thing Max Baer could do was hitting ( or hit, or to hit)
guys with his right and knocking ( or knock, or to knock) them out. Primo
Carnera did better than him against Joe Louis. In his prime, Primo Carnera
wasn't probably any worse than Max Baer. Max Bar was outboxed by Tommy Loughran,
while Primo clearly outpointed him. Da Preem was never a champion, but in his
prime, he really was one of the best heavyweights in the wordl, a legitimate top
contender. In the years between 1930 and 1935 he was an outstanding fighter.
After 1935, he was never the same fighter. |
Preem was a champion, he was the defending heavyweight champion of the world in
the Baer fight after having beaten Jack Sharkey by sixth round knockout. Was he
a great champion? No, but he was still a champion.Carnera was not as
talented as the Klitschko brothers are now but he was not far behind them as he
had a good jab and he knew how to throw combinations. I also don't think he
needed to have people take dives (even though some did) to have a chance to
become champion. |
can split Primo Carnera's career in two parts. Until 1932 he was managed by Leon
See, that (or who) was a moth====er ( it's slang)and took many dives. But after
his loss against Larry Gaines in 1932 he caccio'(don't know caccio' in English)
Leon See and " bought" a new manager whose name was Soresi. Soresi was a honest
person and didn't take any dive.|
kid looking at a Life magazine. It was when Clay had just won title and said he
just joined the list of these heavyweight boxing champions and it showed small
pics of all the champs in order. Well when I looked at Carnera's pic i remember
thinking wow whos this guy and he must have been a monster. But as i've since
learned size and muscles don't necessarily make for a good fighter.I've got
to respectfully disagree with you Kent, I dont think he could have come close to
beating Sharkey in a legit fight. sorry to you too Mass but hey what do I know,
its just my opinion and I picked Jirov to win against Moorer.|
Sharkey 2 fight and it seemed a legit fight to me. Primo kicked the hell out of
Jack ! Of course, I can't be 100 % sure, I can't read in Sharkey's mind but you
can never be 100 % that a fight is honest. When there are (or is) so many money
involved, you can never be sure. I remember Roma-Lecce 2-3, in 1986. The Roma
