egarding the first Persian Gulf war, I reluctantly did support this
action. We can't just let some country invade one of its neigbbors but
even this exception to my rule of never using military force unless we are
attacked is a bitter pill for me to swallow. The reason is instability
in the region can be directly attributed to mendling and imperialism of the
western powers, in this case our good friend Britain. In the early 20th
century, Britain redrew the maps of the region to create Iraq in the first
place. Historically there is no such country as Iraq, there were Kurds, Sunnis
and Shites who lived in what is now that country. Britain all of sudden put
these different groups together as part of an effort to control the region and
the valuable oil supply. That these groups could not get together easily
except under the rule of one dictator of another is easy to see and something we
will always have a problem with as far as having a government. A demcocracy
involving these groups is a good idea but will it work? Who knows?Did
Iraq actually have a valid claim that Kuwait was supposed to be part of their
country in the first place? Who knows also, but it is better to have some
somewhat benevolant capitalistic dictators in Kuwait to having a maniac like
Hussein in charge. But where do we draw the line on using force when we
are not attacked? Why are we always doing most of the work as the world's
policemen by attacking this or that tyrant? We go into the former
Yugoslavia and intervene because of the Serbs abuse there, by the way Yugoslavia
was another thrown together country by outside powers that was bound to fail as
the seperate groups, the Croatians, Serbs, Bosnians, etc, could not easily be
one country except under some hard line dictators rule, in this case Soviet
backed communists before the war in the 1990s, and without that hard line rule
all hell was bound to break loose. But we don't go into some African
countries when atrocities just as bad as what happened in Kosovo and Iraq happen
because this area is not as important as having a stable Europe and a stable
Persian Gulf area, which in the second case is mostly because of the oil
supply.Angelo, should we be a military equivilant of Amnesty
International and attack every two bit thug dictator who abuses innocent
civilain populations? |
while making hateful accusations against me, and then inviting me to chat about
the Top 10 seems a bit....incongruous. In an effort to extend an olive
branch , I will say, however, that my mind changes all the time on that score.
I persistently Tivo ESPN Classic and watch when I have time. I find it very
diffficult to judge the old timers (pre-high quality film and without
contemporaneous commentary). Also, they didn't fight much, most were on the
smaller side, etc. Much easier to judge modern fighters.Every time I think
I have concluded who was best, I will see flaws which make me doubt my choice.
Then there is the "over the long haul" vs the "on his best night" argument.
Sometimes it's Louis, others Marciano, Dempsey - even Ali! Long haul,
maybe Holmes, best night, maybe Frazier, etc. Who knows? The only thing I am
confident of is that it is an impossible task. It's interesting, I have
noticed a pattern of a sort of hero worship with many people, wherein almost
everyone favors the guy from their own "era", whether it's in music, baseball
whatever. Secondarily, regional and ethnic bias come into play. Sometimes
politics (I'll go no further) I think everyone, if they were intellectually
honest, would admit that it's tough to be objective. So, my answer is one
you don't hear much around here - I don't know.|
visit prison recently. They made a mural on the wall for him. He shed a tear
there as he knows that the men in there that give respect to no man have given
it to him. That's street cred.|
to Gerry the angry democrat. People like him hate Bush so much they attack
