and lost to Clay. Fraziers' opposition was from 1968 on tougher, and at least
more frequent than Foreman and Liston.|
name is Kent...Maybe that's just not true! Maybe you are actually from Napoli
and your name is, who knows, Ciro, Gennaro or Pasquale! Maybe you never met Mel
Counts, Giacomo Toney and Wilt Chamberlain! On the other hand maybe you met
Maradona in Napoli back in the 80's... |
but that's okay because I don't have anything against him, whoever he
is.Fan - if you are not Forest and vise versa, then I apologize.
However, using Forest's 'proof of identity' applied to me and Howard C., you two
guys are one of the same. The jury's still out.Bob - Marciano was
convinced when he retired that Al Weil was ripping him off. I heard that Weil
was one of the reasons that Marciano decided to retire. Marciano was a pretty
complicated sort of guy, but apparently very loyal to family and friends. He was
the type of guy that we'd easily like. The story of Marciano would make a
good movie. Does anyone know whether a movie was made about him ? He was the
real Rocky. The last fight Marciano had against Archie Moore was
something. They were both great fighters. Archie stood right in front of
Marciano and went blow for blow with him. He was absolutely courageous. Took
Rocky's best shots and then fired back. It was the previous generations version
of the Thrilla in Manilla, except it only lasted 9 rounds. If you wanted someone
to be beside you in a war, you could do worse than have Archie there. If
you drew up a list of 10 fighters of all time from all divisions based on
character, love of the sport, skill, and courage, as opposed to just sheer
ability, Archie would be in that group. When they stopped Archie's fight
with Marciano, Archie was completely and utterly spent. He had NOTHING left. But
he was still getting back up to do it all again when his corner affectionately
sat him down. The look on Archie's face said it all. It had taken many
consecutive punches to the head to bring him to that end. And Rocky came
straight over and you could see how sincerely concerned he was for Archie's
welfare. What wonderful fighters both of them were. Moore was a guy who
looked for new horizons. He had skill and was prepared to back himself. The hide
of that guy ! He wasn't especially big but he floated between divisions wanting
to fight the very, very best. The fight with Marciano only happened because
Archie chased it. No sitting back taking the safe route for him. No sireeee. He
fought the best of the best. And then he later had the hide to challenge Ali and
Archie really thought he could win that, too. Moore was a one off. We won't see
another one like him. He was a guy totally consumed by the sport of boxing. |
|7/9/05 07:41:12 AM|Massimo|Roma||ShaqFu.com||||10|Noam-Archie Moore was
still a competitive fighter in 1962, when Cassius Clay dominated him in Los
Angeles. He certainly was clearly better in 1955 when he held his own with
Marciano. Now, immagine how good he had to be around 1948 when he was fighting
Ezzard Charles. I think for Ezzard Charles whipping Archie Moore 3 out of 3
times (and one of them by KO) was really a great accomplishment. I think Ezzard
Charles was the best light-heavyweight of all times (even if he never got a shot
at the title), the second was probably Archie Moore, the third Bob Foster and
the fourth was probably Harold Johnson.|
