WRONG WITH WHAT TINA SAID IN THAT ARTICLE.EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN
OPINION..SHE SAID WHAT SHE FEELS.AND THE TRUTH MAY HURT SOME PEOPLE, BUT IT
WOULDN'T HURT UNLESS IT WAS TRUE......|
whatever anyone says about Jerry, I still have a lot of respect for him. So
someone pointing out he had some flaws does not diminish my respect for him one
bit as he was a human being who made some mistakes in life, as we all have. I
do believe that there was more good than bad in Jerry by far and that is how he
will be remembered.|
wasn't that bad. Nothing really new. No one claimed Jerry was perfect. No one
is, no one should be expected to be. But as someone else pointed out, if she has
remarried why does she still use the name Quarry? |
|4/22/04 10:12:03 AM|JQ fan|Vegas||Anon||||10| I was just happily surprised to
see Jerry remembered in a newspaper article in 2004. It's been a while since
I've seen anythng written about him outside this site. I thought other Quarry
fans would find it interesting as well. Putting aside the mention of his
problems - which we'd all heard about - the piece made reference to Jerry as a
guy with a heart of gold and the greatest fighter never to win a title. Not
bad. I was especially pleased, as I expect all of Jerry's fans were, to
learn that his son Jonathan is doing well. I can tell you that life can be
particularly challenging for young men growing up here in Las Vegas; as you
might imagine, there are plenty of "distractions". Jonathan's decision to
devote his energies to ROTC is commendable. If you happen to read this,
Jonathan, congatulations to you, and best of luck as you prepare to enter into
the service of your country. Be safe. I am sure that your father would be proud
of you. |
heavyweights I think the greatest fighters are: 1. Muhammad Ali - he beat all
the best in 2 decades of fighting. 2. George Foreman -he completely creamed the
only two fighters who beat Ali when Ali was still pretty close to his prime
(Frazier and Norton), besides coming back a decade later to become the oldest
heavy champ ever. 3. Joe Louis - I'm not really in his generation, but he had a
great record. He couldn't have beaten Foreman because he was more of a puncher
than a clever boxer and he was smallish heavyweight. Ali would have found a way
to beat Louis by outboxing him. There is no absolute 4. There are a lot of
fighters that I would rate at 4: Lennox, Evander, Larry Holmes, Tyson, Frazier,
Liston, Norton, maybe even Riddick Bowe, oops, I left off Marciano - well, like
Louis it would be difficult for me to rate him, he's just not in my generation.
Jerry Quarry was a great fighter too, based on his victories over Ron Lyle,
Eddie Machen, etc.|
noticed some have dumped on Smokin'Joe lately, I was glad to see charges
dropped, Riddick Bowe or Micheal Dokes he is not. These have been tough days for
Joe with this and the real estate thing, I always have liked him out of the ring
and admired his courage in it. Sorry, exile or not, Frazier beats Ali in their
first fight. Ali did not take Joe seriously enough, and classlessly insulted him
in about the worst way I've ever seen. I don't think most know how lopsidied a
win that was for Joe. That win, and Norton's pummeling of Ali, are two of my
favorite fight moments. Funny how some think Joe would be too light to be champ
now despite his punching power, yet James Toney, Chris Byrd and Roy Jones all
have belts. Yes, JQ would be a real contender in today's heavyweight division
