count. Cooney would have chopped up Chuvalo and you would have said "so, Chuvalo
was too old" etc.... I'm not trying to convince anybody anything, just stating
opinions. Taking the generic assumption of Cooneys ability is apparently yours
and is not based on anything other than lack of boxing knowledge/ignorance. By
the way, Young should have been given the decesion over Ali, 4 yrs. prior to his
match with Cooney and yes Young was a brilliant boxer. Who did Chuvalo defeat in
the top ten of any substance besides Quarry on a fluke ko?|
|7/7/03 02:13:55 PM|John Gerard|NYC||rock289z@yahoo.com||||10|TO DAN: I have no
"relationship" with George Chuvalo except utmost respect for a very good figher.
Cooney's performance against Spinks left something to be desired as did his near
decapitation by 42 year old George Foreman. Yes, I think he was a very nice guy
-- and still is, but that does not negate the fact that he had a glass jaw.
Someone far more eloquent than myself wrote on either this board or another one
"Cooney only had size, a left hook, and good accountant and when they failed him
he was lost". I agree, Young was robbed against Ali and he should have gotten a
rematch. Also just because some posters don't agree with you please don't
question their knowledge of boxing or imply ignorance-- believe it or not some
people can disagree with you and still be in the know. One of the things I
always liked about this board is the respect shown to differing opinions and I
hope we can maintain it. |
|7/7/03 03:57:35 PM|Evren|London||@||||10|I feel George Chuvalo's best victory
was against Doug Jones - a real good performance.His showing against DeJohn was
a good one also not to mention savage. |
John Gerard: I hope that your admonishment of me was not selective. Since you
took the opportunity to scold me as to my opinions, I hope by the same token
that upon looking at other opinions posted on this website that you admonish
others who have posted sarcastic/irresponsible posts. In addition: Having been
to Gleasons Gym in NYC where you apparently use as your home city on this site,
I've heard nothing but good things about Cooneys career and potential, from Iran
Barkeley to average Joes who still talk about his legendary sparring sessions to
this day. As a matter of fact,noted trainer Eddie Futch, shortly before he died
said that Cooney would have been heavyweight champion of the world if he had
trained him. By the way, who did Chuvalo beat again in the top ten to make him a
very good fighter other than his fluke win over Quarry? |
|7/8/03 01:09:57 AM|Ed|Cicero n y||mooseygoop@aol.com||||10|Big fight this Sat.
V Forrest vs R Mayorga. Should be a good one..That Mayoraga is a real character,
he smokes 2 packs a day between fights and even a couple cigarettes a day while
training plus hes willing to put up a $100 000 bet to any sportswriters that
want to bet he'll lose..My pick is Forrest, I think Vernon underestimated him
the first time and was a little over confident after 2 wins against Sugar
Shane...Should be a pier 6 brawl. |
|7/8/03 07:00:09 AM|John Gerard|NYC||rock289z@yahoo.com||||10|TO DAN: I did NOT
"scold" you for your opinions, I respect them greatly and can see your logic.
What makes me puke is your total lack of tolerance for the differing opinions of
others. Just read your own posts. Simply because someone disagrees with YOU
regarding Cooney-Chuvalo, you wonder out loud about their "relationship" with
Chuvalo and say their opinion stems from a lack of boxing knowledge or
ignorance. That kind of arrogance takes all the fun out of discussion. This is
my last post on the subject. We have bored the other visitors enough and I don't
want this fine board to degenerate into a petty bickering board. That would be a
disservice to the very fine boxer it was named after. So write what you will.|
|7/8/03 01:28:40 PM|Dan Cunningham|San Francisco,Ca.||DGCSOCCER@AOL.COM||||10|To
John Gerard: If asking a simple question to establish facts is arrogant then you
are correct about me. I like to talk in terms of facts not fantasy or political
correctiveness. I respect everyones opinion if they are making a point that is
based on fact/logic as opposed to wishful thinking or general stereotyping
