credentials of others, they tend to question yours too. Besides, I gave you an
opportunity to bignote again and you took it.Italian Stallion - that's
the problem with Frazier's career. It's all about wouldas, shouldas, and
couldas. If he fought all those guys, we'd know the result. Fact is he didn't
and it's therefore open to speculation especially given the knockdown by Bruce,
the twin knockdowns by Bonavena, and the....the....the....how many was it
?......knockdowns against Foreman. Joe's chin was vulnerable and he was never a
given against heavy punchers. Besides, we don't 'deem' fights
here.Angelo - I take your point. That song fits.The fight I left
out for Frazier was Bugner. That should have made his top time. Kent -
leaving Ali out, what were Frazier's best wins ? It's a chance for you to argue
merits, not identities or perceived standing among the boxing
community. Thanks for doing that Massimo. The 'dogmeat' comment about
Mathis is not my comment. I'm just repeating what is in Frazier's
book.Fan - I'm looking forward to your review on the three Hauser books
you have. I'd like to know what exactly was biased about them. Thanks.|
you're talking about sure sounds tough. Hits hard, too. Did Frazier ever fight
him ?|
again.You know,every time I watch a fight I haven't seen in a while,I pick up or
see something new.Don't get me wrong,I greatly admire Joe.I wish I was half the
man he was. However,I think I saw Ali outsmart Joe in tactics..He fought just
enough to keep Joe off him for the first eight rounds. Then, he went
flatfooted, and did out punch Joe pretty badly.then he really cranked it up in
the last two rounds.Ali definitely had ring savy.He thought while he fought.|
this crazy site.Your probably not as old as Kent,Fan,or myself. It's hard to
remember everything about every fight from the seventies, but Kent and Fan are
usually pretty accurate. They both know thier stuff.|
|7/30/05 01:11:01 AM|Noam|same||same||||10|Steve - I watched the Ali/Frazier 3
about a month or so again. You described it correctly. Ali won the early rounds,
Joe came back, and Ali finished strong. Both fighters showed heaps of courage. I
wonder how it would have played out in a cooler climate. Ali seemed to be a good
hot weather fighter, if you think about Zaire and Manilla. Those right leads
from Ali kept finding their mark in those latter rounds against Joe. I had Ali
four points ahead, but I think Massimo had it closer. No one can be
critical of Joe for this performance. He was courageous and he shouldn't have
been allowed to fight in this anyway, given his eye problems. I don't think
those problems effected him for most of the fight, but just fighting at that
point must have placed his future health at risk. The whole background to
that fight was a soap opera. Ali over there with a girlfriend that he was
introducing around as his wife (apparently). His real wife flies over there, has
a huge argument with Ali, and immediately flies out of there again.I
wonder if this is always the way with celebrities. Money galore, girlfriends
galore, arguments galore.|
|7/30/05 04:23:36 AM|Massimo |Roma||ShaqFu.com||||10|I admit that Frazier's
resume will always be opened to the question: could he take a really big punch ?
I'm sure he could take tons of very good punches but actually Giorgio Eduardo
knocked him down 8 times in less than 7 rounds. To me this is a little painful
to say as (even "since" would probably work) I am a bit of a Frazier fan, but
it's just what I think. But, on the other hand, not many fighters in boxing
history could take Foreman's, Lyle's, Shavers's and Marciano's bombs and come
back to win or at least survive. I can only think of Holmes, Chuvalo (he lost
big time against Giorgio, but never went down) and Quarry. I don't put Marciano
in this elite as he was knocked down by the first serious punch Walcott landed
and by the light-heavyweight Archie Moore. Regarding Ali', I think he developed
