else, so why would Frazier try anything different? Foreman or his trainers also
would not have had a reason to try something different as their methods had also
worked against everyone else, including two fighters who had beaten Ali, Frazier
and Ken Norton. |
Kinshasa Foreman fought very well in attack and did hit Ali' with many hard
punches ( mostly to the body but a few landed in (or to) the face and landed
very hard), but fought very poorly in defence. Ali' was able to hit(or of
hitting) Giorgio every time he wanted to throughout the entire fight. Giorgio's
performance in attack would have been good enought to beat almost every
heavyweight in history, including Carnera, but Ali' could take one hell of a
punch. Foreman got abruptly tired after round 5, but still managed to throw a
terrible uppercut in round 7, but Ali' was able to take it.|
my friend. George fought the way he fought because he was the champion and why
should he fight at long distance with Ali when he was a killer! - it is only in
hindsight that we can judge what SHOULD have happened. If I was betting on the
fight beforehand I would have encouraged George to go in and done what he done
best - wreck men! No - it was Ali the genius - the master - the maestro. Because
Kent - if George had boxed at long distance Ali would have easily outboxed him.
As Ali once said just beacuse I beat George doesnt mean he isnt the
greatest...'nuff said!|
CALIFORNIA||RONNYRAINS@YAHOO.COM||||10|JERRY QUARRY'S BOUTS were almost always
exciting, the worse ones for me, although I had a heck of a time with the
Chuvalo result. Were Ali II and of course his impromtu bout with Lorenzo (Rocky)
Zanon. I actually scored the bout on the tube with Chris Schenkal. and had it 5-
1-2 Zanon and 39-35 on the 5-point Nevada "must" system. Ironically so did the
LA Times, scoring the first and third even and gave the 8th round to JQ. THEY
Official scoring of the bout was 39-33,39-33,38-34, all for Zanon. 7-1,7-1, and
6-2 in rounds,This bout to me was even worse for JQ then when he fought at 47
with Dementia. Man if he could have only stayed in the broadcast booth!! I knew
of a guy who supposedly dated Charlie Quarry (Arlene)after her divorce to Jerry,
not a sports fan , but knew of JERRY all too well, said he only ran into Quarry
once when Jerry came to Charlie's house, said The Irishman was steaming mad at
her, about some financial reasons or somehting, but other than that was very
polite and rather cordial to him, He did not see her much, for anything
else,"She WAS HIGH MAINTENANCE!"|
|9/9/04 03:36:53 PM|Massimo|Roma||4||||10|The fight with Zanon was one of
Jerry's best fights. Lorenzo, that (or who) almost everyone called Renzo (from I
Promessi Sposi by Alessandro Manzoni) was very strong, as he showed against
Norton and Holmes :-)."I told you all that I am the greatest of all time
!I'm still the greatest of all time ! Don't made me the underdog until I'm
fifty years old ".Muhammad Ali', 30 Ottobre 1974, Zaire, Africa|
have backed off a little bit and conserved his energy.Of course we are
talking about what if, after the fact because Ali/Lyle hadn't happened yet and
this is where the idea for a slugger not to just charge in all of the time and
conserve his energy for the later rounds. Also remember one of the major
reasons Ali was using his counterpunching off of the ropes style was by the time
of the Zaire fight, he couldn't dance for too many rounds anymore.|
watching Quarry-Zanon (Wasn't it the undercard to Young-Norton)? Zanon piled up
the points, but went down like an Italian skyscraper when JQ finally tagged him
good. Same thing happened with Zanon-Norton---Zanon's jabs were getting to
Norton until Norton measured him and dropped him hard. Foreman wouldn't
