couterparts from yesteryear and less incentive to take up boxing.Muscle
definition and skill don't go hand and hand so just because a black athelete is
"cut", so to speak, this would not make him a better fighter if he didn't have
the skill to go with it.White fighters such as the Klitschko brothers,
Vissiliy Jirov, and our own Jerry Quarry beat most of the black fighters because
these white fighters have learned a specialized skill. I was speaking
to a guy the other day who is about 6'8" 360 pounds and everyone always asks him
if he played football (American style). He says he tried in his last two years
of high school but he was not as successful as one might think being he had the
size and natural strength that would give him an advantage over other players.
The reason he gave for his lack of success was he didn't start learning to play
the game at a young age like his smaller but better skilled opponents did.|
|11/25/03 12:30:57 AM|Evan B|Sydney||evanb46@juno.com ||||10|To believe what you
just wrote, Koo Koo, you must believe there is something in increased production
of melanin for darker skin that turns black people into superior athletes.
Either that, or it's their kinky hair, flaring nostrils or larger lips.
Obviously not. RS says: Sure, blacks work hard, but white
athletes work just as hard. Aren't there as many white kids going out for
football, basketball, and track? Are they all lazy? Wanna have an all white
team? Good luck winning many games (as the southern universities found out
decades ago). KOO KOO says: OK, HERE GOES, I'VE SEEN BLACK GUYS ALL MY
LIFE THAT HAVE MUSCLES, NEVER LIFTED ONE WEIGHT, IT IS JUST NATURAL, JUST A
FACT, SOME PEOPLE ARE GOING TO SEE THIS AS A RACIST STATEMENT, WHITES JUST
AREN'T THE ATHLETES THAT BLACKS ARE, THATS THE BIOLOGY OF IT, THATS WHAT JERRY
WAS UP AGAINST, I DON'T EXPECT ANYONE HERE TO AGREE, THAT WOULD NOT BE PC.
Two old debates are whether blacks make superior athletes or whether they
are "naturally" stronger, faster, more powerful or better leapers. No scientific
study has ever established they are. The only anatomical difference between
blacks and whites -- aside from more minor differences in hair, shape of nose,
size of teeth, color of skin -- is that one small bone in the foot is slightly
larger in blacks than in whites. Nothing else. Of course, it does seem
to be a slam dunk that as a group, blacks have done better in sports than
whites. We` cannot make the jump from that to saying blacks are naturally better
athletes, or have better bodies for sports. Wilt Chamberlain was asked once to
comment on this question and said, "Black athletes are not naturally better. If
they were, the world's best volleyball players would be black, and they're not."
For almost every supremely great black athlete, it's possible to
identify a corresponding white athlete who was almost as good or equally as
good. If we can name some exceptions to this rule (Ali, Michael Jordan, etc.)
that doesn't mean the generalization fails to hold. There are hundreds
if not thousands of reasons athletes succeed, and one of the most important is
desire or hunger. This is exactly what many black kids have in great abundance.
For whatever reason, they do not have as many black idols in high places as
white kids do, so they probably tend to choose models in sports, where they know
they have a better chance to perform. Dr. Harry Edwards of San Jose State has
written extensively on this subject and others closely related. RS, no
one says white kids are lazy compared to blacks. The motivation argument could
explain why top hockey players have been white, and why not many black kids have
excelled in the sport (so far). They are not motivated to do so. Same in tennis,
allthough the Williams sisters and other are changing that. Koo Koo, I
wonder what big American cities you've lived in. I've lived in many, where black
populations were large, and the variations in physique (from buffed to obese and
