Malta as the St James Cavalier, into a centre for the arts and for scientific creativity devoted to the culture of
peace. The event itself will be, we hope, an impressive happening of internationally shared joy and beauty. The
Chicago-based sculptor of light John David Mooney will participate with Maltese artists in the symbolic
enactment of Joseph Beuys’ belief that every man is a special kind of artist rather than that the artist is a special
kind of man. Moreover, it should be apparent that the artificial dichotomy of modern times between art and
science is collapsing in the face of contemporary technology. All this, I hope, can serve to herald the day when
culture is no longer forced into subservience to authoritarian politics and politics is totally at the service of the
development of humane multiculturalism. I would like to invite you all to the celebration, preferably in body and
spirit but at least with mind and heart. Thank you.
