18.10 As we come to the close of this century, amidst tremendous developments and achievements, it is most
unfortunate that we are witnessing increased deliberate destruction of human lives. Scientific and technological
developments have brought with them new weapons of war that are used against other human beings. Other
forms of human suffering are also on the increase as young people, in particular, suffer increasing abuse by their
elders and youth becomes more violent against other youth. My delegation agrees fully with the statement in
document 30 C/5 that “… human lives cannot be repaired and happiness, once wrecked, lies forever in ruins”.
Swaziland appreciates the active role that UNESCO, through the Director-General, has played in highlighting the
concept of the culture of peace.
18.11 As we enter the new millennium, let us collectively resolve to promote peace and live by the Manifesto
promoting the culture of peace and make the next millennium a better period to live in. It is only then that we can
peacefully coexist and promote mutual respect for life. UNESCO, Mr President, has awakened our consciences.
Let us vow to live by good humane dictates.
18.12 Finally, Mr President, I would like to inform the Conference that Swaziland is a candidate for the
Executive Board in accordance with the principle of rotation agreed upon by the southern African region. We
count on your full support in this endeavour and assure you of our maximum efforts in the work of the Board. I
thank you.
19. El PRESIDENTE:
Muchas gracias, Excelencia.
