Dear Mr Matsuura,
On behalf of the people of Georgia and in my own name I have the pleasure to congratulate you on your
appointment to the high post of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization.
As you mentioned in your installation address on 15 November, in the course of decades UNESCO has
been offering a “factor of hope” to many peoples throughout the world. UNESCO still has an enormous potential,
since its underlying philosophy and ideals are indispensable for the sustainable human development in the
coming century.
We, in Georgia, are firmly convinced that your long-standing experience and personal skills can be
applied to give new impetus to UNESCO and to skilfully guide this Organization into the twenty-first century.
