9.13 Madam President, Mr Director-General, ladies and gentlemen, we are meeting here at the last session of
the General Conference to be held in the twentieth century. This century has seen an unprecedented expansion of
human civilization. At the same time, mankind has failed in this century to prevent wars and other bloodshed,
mass violation of human rights, division of the world into developed and developing countries and dangerous
interference with the environment. It is the duty of all of us to learn a lesson from recent history and enter the
twenty-first century with the firm resolution never to allow such tragedies to occur again. UNESCO must play an
important role in those efforts – by developing cooperation in the field of education, science and culture and
striving for peace and development. Thank you for your attention.
