19.8 Why UNESCO? Why now? UNESCO’s ethical mission goes to the heart of world challenges. We were
therefore pleased to participate in the first session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Bioethics in Rabat.
International discussions on science and biodiversity are increasingly converging with those on cultural diversity.
19.10 Canada is also a very avid supporter of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme. In January of
this year we nominated two candidate biosphere reserves to UNESCO: Clayoquot Sound in British Columbia,
and Redberry Lake in Saskatchewan. And we are thrilled to hear that there is a recommendation coming on those
issues.
l'UNESCO.
19.12 Since we have been meeting, ten languages in the world have disappeared. Ten languages which
contribute to the human diversity of the planet.
culturelle.
19.14 Canada is committed to building on the momentum created by the Stockholm Conference. As Mr Mayor
has noted, one of the major initiatives following Stockholm was the June 1998 international meeting of ministers
of culture in Canada. This meeting led to the establishment of the International Network on Cultural Policy, an
innovative and flexible network that provides a venue for national ministers of culture to work together in
realizing the Stockholm Action Plan.
(The speaker continues in English)
19.16 The land mines issue was brought to the world table by the people, and the issues of cultural diversity
must also be brought to the world table by the people, which is why we are committed to working not just with
national governments but, in particular, with National Commissions in every country to underscore the
importance to civilization of respect for diversity. Our network recently met in Oaxaca, Mexico, and meetings are
currently planned in Greece, Switzerland and South Africa for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002.
