34.2 The Executive Board at its 157th session considered the request for the admission of Palestine to
UNESCO. Recalling its decisions at previous sessions, it decided to place the request on the agenda of its 162nd
session and recommend to the General Conference the adoption of a resolution which, inter alia, expresses the
hope that it will be able to consider this request favourably at its next session in the light of the progress being
made in the peace process. In presenting this resolution to the General Conference I take the liberty of expressing
my profound hope that peace, which is our ultimate objective, will not just be an ideal but an everyday reality for
all those who are involved in a just and total settlement of the Palestine question. The General Conference might
wish, therefore, to adopt the text in document 30 C/48 Add. in the same heartening spirit of unanimity as did the
Executive Board. I thank you.
35.1 The PRESIDENT:
Are there any comments on the draft resolution contained in document 30 C/48 Add.? I see no
objections or comments. I therefore declare the draft resolution as presented by the Executive Board adopted.
35.2 I can see Palestine wishing to take the floor. I give the floor to Palestine.

Merci, Madame la Présidente. Je voudrais exprimer ma gratitude et celle du peuple palestinien pour la
résolution qui vient d'être adoptée. Nous considérons que l'avancée enregistrée en ce qui concerne la participation
de la Palestine aux travaux de l'UNESCO est une petit pas mais un pas positif sur la voie de la participation du
peuple palestinien aux travaux de la communauté internationale. Nous croyons que le peuple palestinien possède
une riche expérience humaine car en dépit de ses malheurs il est plein d'espoir en l'avenir, en l'avènement de la paix
dans le proche avenir. Je crois que, grâce à cette expérience, nous sommes en mesure d'apporter beaucoup aux
efforts déployés pour la paix dans le monde. J'espère qu'à sa prochaine session, la Conférence générale adoptera la
résolution finale d'admission de la Palestine comme membre effectif participant, à l'instar des autres nations, aux
travaux de l'UNESCO. Merci.

like to congratulate Mr Adolfo Castells from Uruguay on his election as Chairperson of the Credentials
Committee. I would ask him to please take the floor to present the first report of the Committee.
