and an International Mountain Institute have been set up in Kyrgyzstan to coordinate the preparation and conduct
of the International Year of Mountains, thanks mainly to support from UNESCO.
(34.12) On behalf of the Government of Kyrgyzstan, I wish to express the firm hope that all Member States of
UNESCO will make their contribution to working out ways for more harmonious and effective common action in
this most influential international organization to make the new millennium an age of culture, an age of education
and an age of science, this being a most important precondition for the strengthening of peace and stability in the
world. Our hopes are not Utopian. We believe in the creative possibilities of reason. It is important to unite the
efforts of the peoples and States, not to let slip a historic opportunity, and to make the right choice. Thank you.

UNESCO.
