Dense bioceramics of natural wollastonite (CaSiO3) and
hidroxiapatite/wollastonite composites were prepared by the sol-gel technique,
using the sintering method, in order to obtain difference phases of wollastonite,
as well as different physical characteristics in the materials. The products were
characterized by TGA-DTA, XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDS and TEM. The results indicate
the presence of two wollastonite ismorphisms, the β-wollastonite phase and
the α-wollastonite phase, with a transition temperature from the β phase to
the α phase of approximately 1300°C. These materials were immersed in a
simulated body fluid (SBF), to study their solubility and bioactibity. The efect of
the materials on the solubility characteristics of P, Ca and Si ions was analized,
as well as the capacity of production of layer of "newly formed apatites" on the
surfaces of these materials when exposed for 1, 2 and 3 weeks in the SBF
solution, as well as hemolisys test using the standard method for analysis of
hemolytic properties ASTM E2524.
