Nowadays, organic solar cells (OSCs) are some of the most important devices
that have attracted considerable attention as a clean-energy harvesting
technology for their ability to form flexible, large-area photovoltaic panels by
low-cost solution processing methods. Conjugated donor-acceptor (D-A)
copolymers consisting of alternating in-chain electron-rich and electrondeficient
subunits are promising solution-processable photoactive layer
semiconductors for polymer solar cells (PSCs). Power conversion efficiencies
(PCEs) >13% have been recently achieved in bulk-heterojunction (BHJ).
[1] Benzothiadiazole and diketopyrrolopyrrole possess excellent optoelectronic
characteristics such as strong light absorption, high conjugation, coplanar
structure, and good photochemical stability and they have a strong electron
withdrawing nature. [2] In this work, two D-A copolymers based on 3,4-
dihexylthiophene and 4,7-dibromobenzo[c]-1,2,5-thiadiazole (BT) and
thieno[3,2-b]thiophene and 3,6-dithiophene-2-yl-pyrrole[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione
(DPP), were synthetized via direct arylation polycondensation under optimized
reaction condition using palladium acetate as catalyst, potassium carbonate and
neodecanoic acid in N,N-dimethylacetamide. The semiconducting polymers
were purified by soxhlet extraction procedure using several solvents. The
evaluation of both polymers in organic solar cells was carried out using a BHJ
architecture with ITO/PEDOT:PSS/active layer/PFN/Field’s metal configuration.
D-A copolymers described herein have relevant physicochemical properties and
promising efficiencies in organic solar cells.
