In the broad spectrum of materials important to humanity, concrete occupies
the first places and in the aftermath of its development have been made
intensive research that can increase their lifetime. Concrete has a series of
pathologies that cause it to lose mechanical strength and one of these problems
is the cracking of the surface layer of the concrete that reduces the durability of
the material, mainly due to the entry of water and the harmful chemicals that
cause corrosion to the reinforcement. This work shows the development of a
self-repairing concrete from the addition of bacteria to traditional concrete. We
present the results of its compositional, morphological and structural
characterization and its correlation with the mechanical properties analyzed
from the perspective of self-repair of cracks. The study presented here focuses
on the development of bacterial culture of the Bacillus genus, the design of the
mixture and the mechanical characterization of the compound with the aim of
identifying a mixture that allows the self-repair of cracks in the structure. Our
results corroborate that the addition of bacteria can be an alternative
prevention and control of corrosion generating an environmental impact
through a sustainable process, which would help to minimize costs in the
maintenance of housing.
