Coatings microstructure depends strongly on the conditions during the splat
formation. This work summarizes the results for coating carbon steel plates by
flame spraying of composite particles with two different configurations either
static torch/moving substrates or static substrate/moving torch. The study was
conducted by monitoring the characteristics of composite particles consisting of
AISI 316L stainless steel and α-alumina at the impact against metal substrates.
The aim of changing the spraying configuration is based on the need to coat
larger surfaces with similar microstructures in order to prevent damage due to
exposure in a salt fog. Spraying distance, substrate temperature, passing speed
and geometry of deposit were evaluated for controlling the homogeneous
dispersion of phases and overlapping. From optical and scanning electron
microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis, results reveal a better control for
building coatings with the static torch/moving substrates configuration.
However, coatings on larger surfaces must be performed at several steps in
order that substrates were no overheated. Both configurations allow the
building of composite coatings with a significant reducing of corrosion damage,
particularly with the static torch/moving substrates configuration.
