Bimetallic nanoparticles recently have been proven as efficient fuel cell catalysts
due to their enhanced catalytic properties, especially for the core-shell
configuration. The Pd as shell provides an extended life of the catalyst compared
to Pt based alloys and a smaller production costs. This work shows an enhanced
polyol synthesis method to obtain bimetallic AgPd nanoparticles and their
structural characterization. High-angle annular dark field scanning/transmission
electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images and parallel beam X-ray diffraction
(XRD) of the bimetallic nanoparticles were obtained. XRD and the contrast of the
HAADF-STEM images show that the bimetallic nanoparticles have a core-shell
structure. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was carried out in order to confirm the
electrochemical responses of the AgPd/C electrocatalysts for methanol
oxidation. The AgPd/C electrocatalysts exhibited excellent If/Ib ratio, indicating
the exceptional anti-poisoning strength and potential to be used in fuel cell
conditions.
