THE GRAPHENE INDUSTRY: FROM THE LAB TO THE MARKET
Antonio Miramontes 1
1 Graphenemex, CEO, Mexico.
The new graphene industry shows great potential. However, in spite of the huge
investment in applications development and the myriad of studies, there are
serious deficiencies in moving technology from research to market
products. Frequently, researchers answer a question that solves the wrong
problem or economic concerns are underestimated, if considered at all. In this
regard, research does not take into account process efficiency and industrial
scale. It is important to include detailed analysis of actual costs, to determine
technical feasibility and to adapt the new technologies to current production
processes. Graphene-based applications should lead to substantial
improvement over competing technologies and is critical to determine whether
enhanced properties or cost savings are sufficient to justify the adoption of the
new material. Applications research should consider product design approaches
to reflect the unique properties of graphene, as well as any environmental and
use changes. More than ever, it is necessary to look for the challenges where
they are. In so doing, graphene applications development should consider the
following criteria: Identify potential value of research, differentiating pure
science aspects from business. Develop graphene applications according to
innovation cycles, technology maturity and economic feasibility.
Produce graphene material tailored to the needs of each application.
Determine requirements for: mass production, supply chains, distribution,
pricing, production processes, quality control, technology certification,
regulations compliance and commercialization.
Determine rights and ownership in order to protect the intellectual property.
Secure the necessary regulatory approvals, if required.
Perform technical proof-of-concept studies to demonstrate that the application
can be effective in a real-world setting.
Develop the technology into a commercially attractive proposition.
