A dimensionless and universal representation of the arc column characteristics
and arc - weldpool interactions in tungsten inert gas welding (TIG) are presented
in this work. Characteristics of the arc such as voltage, current density, magnetic
field, temperature, jet velocity, as well as arc-weld pool interactions like arc
pressure, heat and current fluxes at the anode surface are presented in this
paper through simple equations derived as a function of the arc length and
current. These equations were obtained numerical simulations of the arc region
in TIG welding burning in argon gas and using different operation conditions of
arc current and arc length. Also, it is accounted the fact that the arc region is the
loci of the 10,000K isotherm, i.e. temperatures above 10,000K present
significative electric conductivity and temperatures below 10,000K do not
conduct electricity. This dimensionless representation of the arc properties and
arc-weldpool interactions may be used for practical welders to improve the
quality of the welding by controlling the operating parameters of the process.
