100 YEARS OF SCHERRER EQUATION: NO ALTERNATIVES YET?
Matteo Leoni 1
1 Università degli Studi di Trento, DICAM, Italy.
Scherrer equation is 100 years old, but it is still the most widely employed tool
for the characterisation of the size of nanocrystalline materials. Longevity
however does not mean accuracy. Several developments in the field occurred in
the past decades and we have reached a better understanding of the
relationship between specimen and diffraction pattern in terms of
microstructure. We will show that Scherrer equation does not always give a
correct interpretation of the diffraction data. The most modern alternatives are
discussed for a quantitative determination of the size of the coherent domains
(crystallites) diffraction data.
Keywords: Scherrer equation, microstructure, WPPM
