The Ni alloys generally used for the construction of the molten salt fast reactor
can be prone to corrosion attacks and deleterious thermal effects on their
mechanical properties at temperatures above 700°. In order to reduce the
possibility of corrosion and thermal damage particularly during off-normal
conditions, we are currently developing environmental barrier coatings bases
on yttria stabilized zirconia. Due to the need to produce these coatings at
temperatures below 700°C, we have produced these materials by sol-gel/dipcoating
and plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition. We discuss the
advantages and disadvantages of each processing route based on its
microstructure, cubic phase content and mechanical properties, all
characterized by Raman spectroscopy, XRD, SEM/EDS, TEM and indentation.
