IMPROVED BIOCOMPATIBILITY OF 2D NANOMATERIALS BY<br />

SURFACE MODIFICATION<br />

Two dimensional (2D) nanomaterials display excellent properties for application<br />

in a vast wide of field. As a novel 2D nanomaterials, black phosphorus<br />

nanosheets (BPs) showed promising potential in therapeutics, imaging and drug<br />

delivery. BPs has been already demonstrated as a good nanomaterial in cancer<br />

phototherapies and control release of drugs. However, the introduction of BPs<br />

into the body might induced side-effects due to the possible small size and the<br />

high activity because of the high ratio in surface area. Till now, the data on the<br />

safety of BPs is extremely lack, which limits the wide application of this materials.<br />

We here investigated the toxicity of BPs on mammal with mouse as a model. We<br />

have demonstrated that bare BPs could stimulate the inflammation upon<br />

intravenous injection. We compared the toxicity of bare BPs and titanium<br />

modified BPs (TiL4@BPs). Our results demonstrated that titanium ligand could<br />

protect BPs oxidation and TiL4@BPs exhibited no such adverse immune<br />

responses. We then investigated the mechanisms of bare BPs underlying the<br />

inflammatory effects. Our results indicated that the detailed investigation on the<br />

biological effects of BPs with different modification is useful for their application<br />

with low risks. We reported an efficient method to reduce the toxicity of bare<br />

BPs.<br />
