STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES
Nanoparticles that are hollow in the inside have tunable optical properties that
are promising for applications that operate in the biological window. Their
geometrical structure is also promising for applications such as drug delivery
and targeted tissue destruction at the nanoscale. In this presentation, we will
discuss the synthesis of gold nanoboxes (AuNB’s) and their structure opticalproperty
relationship. The hollow cubic AuNB’s were synthesized solid cubes of
Ag via a galvanic replacement reaction. UV-Vis-NIR analyses of AuNB’s showed
two localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) whose peak position highly
dependent on the structure of the hollow cubes. In addition to the size of AuNB,
the LSPR position changed depending on the alloying, pinhole size and
distribution on the walls of AuNB’s. The void inside the particle also affected the
LSPR behavior. These results were obtained by statistical analyses of hundreds
of scanning electron microscopy images, high resolution transmission electron
microcopy of individual cubes and finite element simulations. These approaches
and further details will be discussed in the presentation. This work provides new
insights into the structure of hollow particles and how the nanoscale structural
changes affect the optical properties of the ensemble, as a whole.
