NEW 2D MATERIALS DESIGN STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE THE
SAFETY OF LITHIUM BATTERIES
Reza Shahbazian Yassar 1
1 University of Illinois at Chicago, Mechanical Engineering, United States.
The safety of Lithium ion and Li-metal batteries to great extend depends on the
architecture of electrodes used in the cell design. This presentation gives an
overview of the new materials design strategies to boos the safety. By utilzing
2D materials within the structure of high voltage cathodes we were able to
mitigate the oxygen loss in the cathodes. Our in situ TEM studies show that the
valance change of Co atoms in LiCoO2 could be altered by the encapsulation
meechanism without significant loss of electrochemical performance of our
batteries. In addition, we have shown that 2D materials can supress the growth
of lithium dendrites by regulating their deposition process over the surface of
lithium metal. At the end, I will give perspectives on how 2D materials can
revolutionize the future design of safe lithium batteries.
