Typically, commercial low carbon steels for deep drawing quality (DDQ)
applications, shows relatively low strength values compensated with a large
forming ability. As a way to improve mechanical properties without penalizing
ductility characteristics, a refinement of the grain size can be a suitable strategy.
Therefore, the aim of this work is to obtain an ultrafine grained DDQ (0.08%C-
0.3%Mn) steel by application of Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) techniques.
For this purpose, the Repetitive Corrugated and Straightening (RCS) process is
applied. RCS exhibits several advantages like continuous processability,
simplicity for industrial application and no significant changes in the material
dimensions. In this communication results are shown concerning the
microstructural evolution, carried out by electron backscattering diffraction
(EBSD), and the mechanical properties (tensile and hardness tests) obtained
under different processing routes.
Acknowledgment:
The authors gratefully acknowledge for the financial supports to CONCAYT and
to TERNIUM México, S.A. de C.V. for providing the material used in this research
and also financial supports. The authors also would like to thank Universidad
Politécnica de Cataluña for the facilities to perform this project. These supports
are gratefully appreciated.
