Yttrium orthoaluminate (YAlO3:YAP), is a host material exhibiting good optical,
thermal and mechanical properties. Orthorhombic-phase YAP has found wide
applications in laser materials, phosphors, scintillators, thermoluminescent (TL)
dosimetry of ionizing radiation, and pigments because of its fast scintillation,
high light yield and electroluminescence properties. Nevertheless, their wide
applications are yet restricted owing to either excessive using organic materials,
or strong relying on special equipments, and involving complicated
manipulations and too long synthetic cycle. Therefore, how to prepare YAP
powders under milder condition by a simpler and more convenient method is
still a big challenge to be faced.
Here, we propose a new preparing route, YAP powders were successfully
synthesized by the polyester-combustion method. The synthesized powders
have been characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, micro-
Raman spectroscopy, in addition to visible ultraviolet spectroscopy and using a
scanning electron microscope (SEM) it was examined surface, morphology and
impurity content of the YAP. Obviously, this method possesses unique merits
such as relatively low synthetic temperatures (below 100 °C), no organic
additives, and easy manipulation compared to other approaches. The optically
stimulated luminescence (OSL) properties have been studied for YAP crystal
applicable for thermoluminescent (TL) dosimetry of ionizing radiation and UV
light.
