The inhibiting performance of natural extract Aloe-vera leaves on the corrosion
mild steel in 1.0 M HCl solution was investigated by using electrochemical
impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Tafel techniques. EIS data (e.g. Nyquist plots)
revealed that increasing of extract concentration increases the diameter of
semicircle, which is associated to the charge transfer resistance; therefore the
extract inhibited remarkably the corrosion reaction of the steel exposed in acidic
solution. Whereas, Tafel plots showed that the extract behaved as mixed type
corrosion inhibitors with predominant anodic effectiveness. Finally, the surface
appearance was observed through scanning electron microscope (SEM), which
showed a significant improvement on the surface of the mild steel plate in the
presence of ALOE-VERA extract in 1.0 M HCl solution. The results shown on this
research indicate that the natural extract obtained ALOE VERA leaves could
serve as an effective green corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in hydrochloric acid
solution.
