Thin film solar cells of CdS/CdTe have achieved some degree of commercial
success due in part to relatively low production costs. However, CdS/CdTe
technology may still be further developed for large-scale implementation with
additional technology improvements. It has been well established that the
quality of the films influences the behavior of the solar cells. Microstructural
defects such as pores, or irregular interfaces, tend to lower the photoconversion
efficiency. Accordingly, to increase the overall efficiency of the device, the
deposition techniques need to be properly controlled. In this work, we focused
on CdS thin films deposition techniques as an initial stage to improve the
manufacturing process of the solar cell. A comparison is made between CdS thin
films deposited by the chemical bath deposition (CBD) method and the
successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. Efforts have been
made to quantify the porosity, and other thin film quality parameters, of films
deposited using both methods. The characterization results would be
presented.
