Two new coordination complexes of methyl orange with Cu(II) and Fe(III) were
prepared, and characterized by analytical methods. The results obtained from
elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, UV-visible, molar conductance,
X-ray powder diffraction (XRD): showed that the synthesized complexes are in
octahedral geometry; the results obtained from thermal analysis indicates that
the complexes were stable up to 450 °C. The synthesized complexes were used
as sensitizer to study the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and were
compared with the standard ruthenium dye. The solar cell was fabricated using
graphite as photo cathode, TiO2 as photo anode and I-/I 3- as electrolyte. The
sensitizers (Ruthenium dye, [Cu(MO)2Cl2] and [Fe(MO)2Cl2] were varied and the
conversion efficiency of solar cell was investigated. The [Fe(MO)2Cl2] showed a
conversion efficiency nearer to the standard ruthenium dye.
