Titanium Oxide has an extended use as photocatalyst in advanced oxidation
processes, such as many authors have reported previously. The same charge
carriers produced when TiO 2 is radiated with UV light and that on the surface of
the material generate free radicals that destroy chemical bonds in the
mineralization of organic molecules, can be used also to form new bonds in
certain organic molecules through reduction processes. In this work we report
some chemical conditions needed to achieve the reduction of benzophenone
under visible light using TiO 2 pure and doped with sulphur, nitrogen and iodine.
Doping modifies the band gap structure of the TiO 2 allowing for photocatalytic
activity with light over 400 nm. The characterization of doped titanium oxides
carried out by DRX, DRS and nitrogen adsorption techniques is presented, as
well as the kinetic curves of benzophenone reduction using isopropanol as
hydrogen donor.
