The analysis of potentials mapping of reinforced concrete structures exposed to
indoor laboratory conditions and to the environment in southeastern Mexico is
presented after a year of being submitted to electrochemical realcalization
according to Standard Practice NACE SP0107-2007, using a saturated solution of
calcium hydroxide. Two series of concrete with a water/cement ratio of 0.49 and
0.69 and three reinforcing steels with a coating of 15, 20, and 30 mm of concrete
thickness were manufactured. The results of the potential mapping indicate the
heterogeneities of the concrete due to the relative humidity of the medium. This
was reflected in the distribution of potentials where the lower part presented
more negative potentials than the upper part of the structures exposed to the
environment; in the case of those exposed to indoor laboratory, the behavior
was opposite. The main behavior for both series and exposure condition were
potentials located in the uncertainty zone, achieving corrosion activity potentials
the specimens exposed to the environment. The effect of the water/cement
ratio and the concrete coating was not significant.
