TiO2, Al2O3, AND ZnO AS BIOMATERIALS FOR ANTIBACTERIAL
APPLICATIONS IN DENTISTRY
Nanotechnology has offered great possibilities in various fields of science and
technology. Medical applications of nanomaterials can help to solve many
important medical problems. In the last 10-year numerous applications for
nanotechnology in dentistry have been use to promote various therapies such
as: tissue regeneration, development compounds that stimulate responses in
the body and to generate antimicrobial effects on dental materials.
Oral cavity is a dynamic environment that presents a unique bacterial flora,
where over 500 different bacterial species have been identified. The use of
engineering nanomaterials in dentistry it may be promising for infection control
and management of oral biofilm.
The antimicrobial activity of metals such as silver, titanium, zinc, copper, gold,
has been know and applied for centuries each having various properties,
potencies and spectra of action. Physicochemical and morphological
characteristics of nanometals have been proven to exert an effect on their
antimicrobial activities. For example: positive surface charge of the metal
nanoparticles facilitates their binding to the negatively charged surface of the
bacteria which may result in an enhancement of the bactericidal effect, shape
and size also have influence in their antimicrobial effect. But all these materials
are found to be capable of killing bacteria.
Metal oxides like Nano-sized ZnO, TiO2 or Al2O3 can be incorporated into dental
materials to improve the antibacterial capacity of these materials.
